The XML sitemap is a reference file for Googlebot, Bingbot, but also for generative AI agents that explore websites. These new crawlers use the sitemap exactly like a traditional search engine: they crawl each listed URL and ingest the accessible content.

The risk is direct. Any URL present in the sitemap becomes publicly crawlable. An admin page, a staging directory, an internal form forgotten in the XML file are all potential entry points. Recent optimization guides for AI search (GEO) explicitly recommend limiting the sitemap to useful and public URLs, and monitoring server logs to spot accesses from unidentified crawlers.

We recommend a quarterly audit of the sitemap to ensure that no private or pre-production URLs are included. This check is coupled with the robots.txt file and, when the site also targets LLMs, with a llms.txt file that specifies the sections allowed for crawling. Consistency Between Sitemap, robots.txt, and Server Access Rights

An effective sitemap does not work alone. It is part of a technical triptych with robots.txt and server-side access rights configuration. When these three layers contradict each other, the consequences affect both SEO and security.

Frequent Contradictions to Correct

Listing a URL in the sitemap while blocking it in robots.txt sends a contradictory signal to Google Search Console, which then reports indexing errors. The engine tries to crawl the page, encounters the prohibition, and wastes crawl budget.

The opposite is more dangerous: a sensitive page absent from robots.txt but present in the sitemap becomes freely accessible. We observe this case on sites that automatically generate their sitemap via a WordPress plugin without an exclusion filter.

  • Check that each URL in the sitemap returns an HTTP 200 code, not a 301 redirect or a 404 or 403 error
  • Exclude from the sitemap URLs protected by authentication, even if they are technically accessible without blocking JavaScript
  • Synchronize the Disallow directives in robots.txt with the exclusions in the sitemap to avoid contradictory signals to Google and AI agents

This consistency can be verified in Google Search Console, under the “Sitemaps” tab, by cross-referencing the submitted URLs with the indexing coverage report.

HTML Sitemap and User Navigation: An Underutilized Lever

The HTML sitemap is aimed at visitors, not bots. Its role is to provide a clear navigation page, often placed in the footer, that lists the sections of the site as clickable links. On large sites, it reduces click depth and allows reaching any page in a maximum of two interactions.

From an SEO perspective, the HTML sitemap distributes internal linking to deep pages that the main menu cannot all contain. Orphan pages (without internal incoming links) disappear as soon as they appear in this visible sitemap.

On the security side, the HTML sitemap deserves the same rigor as the XML. Displaying a link to an unprotected admin interface or client area is akin to publishing an access panel. We recommend generating the HTML sitemap from the same filtered list as the XML, excluding any URL that does not pertain to public navigation.

Sitemap Maintenance Strategy for SEO and Site Protection

A sitemap is not a static file. The frequency of updates determines how quickly Google discovers new content and removes deleted pages from its index.

lastmod Tag and Crawl Priority

The lastmod tag of the XML sitemap indicates the last modification date of each URL. If this date is reliable (updated only when the content actually changes), Googlebot optimizes its crawl by targeting recently modified pages. An artificially updated lastmod date on all pages with each build degrades the crawler’s trust in the file.

Removal of Obsolete URLs

Keeping URLs in the sitemap that return 404 errors or chain redirects wastes crawl budget. On a site with thousands of pages, this waste slows down the indexing of recent content.

  • Remove from the sitemap any URL returning a code other than 200 within seven days of its detection
  • Automate this check with a crawler like Screaming Frog or a server-side script that parses the sitemap and tests HTTP codes
  • Submit the updated sitemap in Google Search Console after each cleanup to speed up processing

Sitemap Segmentation on Large Sites

Google accepts sitemap files containing up to 50,000 URLs. Beyond that, segmentation into multiple files referenced by a sitemap index becomes mandatory. This segmentation has a secondary advantage for security: it allows isolating sections of the site by content type (product pages, articles, resources) and finely controlling which sections are submitted to search engines.
